What is Heart Disease
By Linda Tremer

You have a twenty-five percent chance of dying of heart disease. More people die of heart disease than cancer. Heart disease encompasses many different problems that affect the heart. These problems include heart attack, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, high cholesterol, angina and congestive heart failure.

Heart disease is a result of years of eating the wrong foods. Our Western diet with too much sugar, high fat foods and not enough fiber causes hardening of the arteries. A lack of exercise also contributes to this problem.

Coronary artery disease occurs when the arteries supplying the heart narrow. This interrupts the supply of blood to the heart. Thus the heart has to work harder. If it does not get enough oxygen, chest pain (angina pectoris) results.

Two large coronary arteries feed the blood to the heart. When one of the arteries is blocked, a heart attack results. The blockage is the result of hard plaque that has formed from fatty deposits. Blood clots may form and block the blood supply.

Because of the lack of blood, part of the heart actually dies during a heart attack. The remaining part of the heart tries to take over the job that the whole heart used to do. Your recovery from a heart attack will depend on how much of the heart was destroyed.

Congestive heart failure is when the heart cannot efficiently pump the blood through out your body. This results in a lack of oxygen to the body. Symptoms are shortness of breath, swollen ankles (edema), and fatigue. Congestive heart failure can cause a fluid accumulation in the lungs.

Atherosclerosis, narrowing of the arteries, is the main cause of coronary artery disease. The arteries also become inelastic. Arteries that were once smooth and elastic are now rough, inelastic and narrow. They cannot supply the same amount of blood needed by the body.

Angina pain feels like your heart is being squeezed. It also feels like a heaviness in the heart. It results from a lack of blood flow to the heart.

Risk factors for heart disease are age, heredity, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and stress.

Prevention is the key to stopping heart disease. The DASH diet has been found to lower blood pressure. Dean Ornish has a diet and lifestyle program that reverses and prevents heart disease. Moderate daily exercise is an integral part of preventing heart disease. You are better off preventing heart disease instead of living with the results of it.
